A parent's guide to understanding Autism Spectrum disorder.

About the new Autism Parent Connection
Welcome to the new Autism Parent Connection. My name is Allison Flatt. I am a Certified Education Assistant and ABA Support worker. I am starting this website as part of a university final project for my Bachelor of Arts Degree in Leadership from Trinity Western University. I am the mother of two teenage sons, 17, and 15. I have been working with Children with Autism for more than 10 years. My youngest son was diagnosed with Autism at the age of 9.
My vision for this project is to cultivate a community for parents, guardians, and caregivers of children diagnosed with autism. The community will have an online platform with an area for resources, a blog, and an online discussion forum. It will be introduced to parents, guardians, and caregivers of children in late elementary school, middle school, and high school (aged 9 – 18).

The principal goal of this project is to “promote a sense of community development around each of the three elements of cultivating a community of parents of children diagnosed with autism. A community must have “a shared understanding” (Wenger, 2002, p. 35) amongst members. The purpose of this community is to “provide the common language that facilitates discussion” (Wenger et all. 2002, p40)
